Tips on How to Care for your House Plants
House plants in a home gives off a nice ambience. Keeping them nice and healthy can be a worrisome problem. Here are a few tips to help maintain your house plants. 1. Re-potting Before you put your plant in its specified spot, ycheck to see if it needs to be re-potted. Some plants require re-potting for optimum growth but there are others that resent having their roots disturbed. Or their roots system may be small enough that they don't require re-potting. One way to check if your plant needs re-potting is to turn it upside down. Tap the pot to release the plant and check its roots. If roots are all you see, then re-pot it into a bigger container. Sometimes the roots will come out of the pot cut them off. 2. Lighting Some plants require lots of sun while others don't. Plants like Sanseveria and Aspidistra require no sun. They can be placed away from a window. Spider plants need semi-shade. You can put plants like these near a window that does or does not get sunlight. Check the plant care label to see what type of lighting your plant needs. 3. Temperature Most houseplants can survive in cool or warm temperatures, however drastic fluctuations of temperature may not be good for them. One thing that most plants cannot survive is gas heating. If you have a plant that likes warm conditions, don't put it near an air conditioner in the summer. 4. Humidity Some houseplants require a humid and moist environment. Here's a tip to maximize humidity. Take a small potted plant and insert it in a larger pot. Fill in the gaps with stones or compost to keep in the moisture. Group plants together this creates a semi-moist microclimate that they will all benefit from. Spray them with water once or twice a day depending on the temperature to help keep the plants moist. 5. Watering This can be I think one of the main reasons why house plants die. Overwatering! Overwatering your house plants will kill them. Looks can be deceiving,if the top soil looks dry it doesn't mean it is. To check if your soil is dry enough to water, try the finger test. Insert your index finger up to the first joint into the soil. If the soil is damp, don't water it. 6. Feeding Or in other words, Fertilizer. Water is not enough to keep your house plants healthy. Foliage plants usually have high nitrogen needs, while flowering plants, K2O is needed. Slow release fertilizers can be mixed with the compost. However, certain plants like cacti and orchids need special fertilizer. Feed plants during their most active growth period. Read the instructions and labels before feeding your plants. Indoor plants not only add to the beauty of your décor, but also give much pleasure to an indoor gardener. House plants help to bring the outdoors in. Exercise a little care and your will reap the benefits of healthy houseplants.
